Magic Maker - Colleen Saidman Yee

Posted on

At Posie Turner we are inspired by good words, soulful connections and spirited souls who give life their all. We aspire to cultivate a community of passionate, creative individuals who cheer each other on and energize one another.

We are excited to introduce our Magic Maker series, a spotlight on people who we admire and who illuminate the world around them. Inspire yourself. Inspire each other. Together, we are Posie Turner.

We are honored to introduce you to the "First Lady of Yoga" (New York Times) and Magic Maker, Colleen Saidman Yee!

Profession? Yoga Teacher, Owner of Yoga Shanti, and Author

Past life? Country Western Singer

Astrological sign? Leo

Favorite drink? Gingerade Kombucha

Favorite mantra? You are enough.

What are you most proud of? My daughter, Rachel, who is finding her voice as a young woman. She has learned from my mistakes and from being bullied as a young teen and has turned it into positive messaging for those younger than her 20 years. She is taking those teachings to Junior High Schools and also has begun teaching yoga in a studio at her college - UCSB.

I’m also proud of the fact that I am an author – not in my wildest dreams did I think that would be my path.

What advice would you give to your younger self? Guilt is wasted energy.

If you could have one wish come true, what would it be? A personal wish would be that I could sing. I so want to be able to express myself in that way….but, not in this life.

Who is your idol? Mother Teresa and Bob Dylan. Mother Teresa walked the talk. She wanted to give people dignity before they died and she didn't do it from a mansion on the hill, but from the streets full of lepers. She instilled in me that the only path to peace is through service.

Bob Dylan helped get me through rough times, and continues to speak to me and inspire me with songs like: "Make You Feel My Love, Shelter From the Storm, and Knocking on Heavens Door, and of course Forever Young (which is one of my Posie Turner socks!)

What is one thing your friends would be surprised to know about you? I swear like a truck driver and I cry over Disney Movies and am addicted to junk food even as a vegetarian.

Where do you go to find inspiration? Music.

If you could make one wish for our world, what would it be? Stop killing each other!!!

What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced in your life? Drugs and betrayals. I was a young heroin addict and the only thing that got me clean was the realization of how desperately I was hurting those that love me. Addiction is a disease that can lie dormant with great strength and awareness of how it hurts those that love you.

Anything else you would like to share? Pick up kindness as a hobby. Worry less and love more. If there is anything else that you would like to know about my colorful life, it is all in ink in my new book, Yoga for Life: A Journey to Inner Peace and Freedom: http://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Life-Journey-Inner-Free...

Favorite Posie Turner Sock? Forever Young
